French magazine “Le Monde de la Musique”, in its February 2004 edition, presents Gustavo Carvalho as one of the most promising talents of his generation.
During the 2017/2018 season, he will give recitals and concerts with orchestra in France, Germany, Israel, Russia, Spain, Holland, England Vietnam and Brazil. He will perform with several orchestras in South America and Europe, under the direction of Igor Verbitsky and Evgeny Bushkov, among others. Carvalho is also a guest artist by Mons 2025 Foundation, in collaboration with the visual artist François Andes, as part of the Biennale de Mons 2018.
Gustavo Carvalho studied with Magdala Costa in Belo Horizonte, Oleg Maisenberg at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna and Elisso Virsaladze at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
Born in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) in 1982, he played Shostakovich’s concertos at the age of twelve with the Orquestra Sinfônica de Minas Gerais at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte.
He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in America, Europe, Asia and Africa, together with Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, Camerata Salzburg and “New Russia” Orchestra, among others under the direction of conductors like Ira Levin, Howard Griffiths, Evgeny Bushkov.
As a chamber musician he has collaborated with pianists Nelson Freire and Elisso Virsaladze, soprano Eliane Coelho and violinists Geza Hosszu-Legocky and Daniel ROwland. His interest for contemporary music brought him collaboration with composers like György Kurtág, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Sérgio Rodrigo and Harry Crowl, among others.
Gustavo Carvalho has played several times for pianists Nelson Freire and Martha Argerich, who comment about him: “What I particularly admire about him is his deep understanding of music and his knowledge, which extends well beyond piano literature “(Nelson Freire). “His play is full of intelligence, sensitivity and fantasy” (Martha Argerich).
Gustavo Carvalho is founder and artistic director of Festival Artes Vertentes in Tiradentes (Brazil), which will have its 8th edition in September 2019.
